The Privilege of Not Having to Judge

It’s probably no surprise that today’s political climate has sparked concern and uncertainty for many. With changes in administration at both the federal and state levels, along with a wave of executive orders, some people feel uncertain, maybe even unsettled about what’s ahead.
As a nonprofit healthcare provider serving people from all walks of life, Aspire Indiana Health is not immune to these shifts. We’ve had conversations with employees who are understandably worried about the potential impact of new policies. As an organization, we remain actively engaged with leaders and lawmakers — both independently and in collaboration with other healthcare providers — to ensure we continue fulfilling our mission.
As President & CEO of Aspire, my role is not to take political sides or inject my personal views into our shared mission. That’s not my job — nor is it my inclination. From the moment I entered the healthcare field as a nurse, my focus has always been the same: what is best for the patient?
I vividly remember my early days as a young nurse in the United Kingdom, caring for patients whose lives had been overtaken by addiction or diagnosed with HIV/AIDS — at a time when such a diagnosis carried deep stigma and was often seen as a death sentence. Some voices in society suggested these individuals had “brought it on themselves.”
But my response was always simple: provide the best care possible and ensure every person who walked through our doors felt safe, valued and supported. Sometimes, I couldn’t offer a cure, but I could offer compassion, dignity and comfort.
Now, decades later and in a different role, my perspective remains the same.
Aspire Indiana Health’s doors will always be open to anyone who needs care. Regardless of who you are, where you come from or what you believe, you will always be welcomed here. We are not here to judge — we are here to serve, to heal and to stand in the gap for those who need us most.
As a nurse, I sat across from patients whose beliefs or lifestyles may have differed from my own. Some may have even found my views just as challenging as I found theirs. But my commitment never wavered: to provide the highest quality care, without exception.
That is what Aspire has always stood for — and what we will continue to stand for.
There is a privilege in not having to judge. Even when a medical condition cannot be “fixed,” there are always ways to relieve suffering, provide support and bring dignity to the care we offer.
No matter how you feel about today’s political landscape — uncertain, hopeful or somewhere in between — Aspire Indiana Health will remain steadfast in our mission: to serve, without judgment.
That is our enduring promise.
