Biking across the U.S.A. for affordable housing

By Christopher Lloyd

Haylie Will, Staff Interpreter with the Deaf Services team, will embark at the end of May on a bicycle journey across the country to raise funds and awareness for affordable housing. She is part of a 25-member team for Bike and Build. They will start in Virginia and average 70 miles per day, finishing up in Portland, Ore., sometime in mid-August.

“I have been raising money to help fund our build materials, meals and bike equipment we will need along the way, and am almost at my goal of $5,000,” Will says. She is taking a leave of absence to help spread the word on the need for affordable housing in every part of the country, from big cities to rural areas.

Along the way, they will stop each night in a different host city. Even after a hard day of biking, Haylie and her team will either help build housing or give a town hall presentation.

“So many cities including my own suffer from a severe shortage of affordable housing, so I'm taking the opportunity to do something tangible about it. By committing to Bike and Build, I am building my own physical and mental resiliency while helping provide affordable housing to various communities across the country,” Will says.
