Stand Up for Kids ramps up ambitions for fifth year

For the fifth year of “Stand Up for Kids,” the signature annual fundraising event for Kids Talk Child Advocacy Center, director Denise Valdez felt it was time to raise their ambitions and kick things up a notch.

For the first four years the comedy showcase had been held at the upstairs ballroom of Anderson’s magnificent Paramount Theatre, which holds about 400. They’ll still be in the ballroom this Sept. 7 — but only for the preshow VIP event that includes a silent auction and amateur comedy lineup.

The main show will be downstairs in the main theater, which seats 1,400.

To fill 3½ times as many seats, Stand Up for Kids is bringing in its highest-profile act to date: nationally known comedian Jeff Allen. Known as a “clean” comic whose routines often focus on family and faith, Allen has been a mainstay on the comedy circuit for decades, appearing on cable television, comedy festivals and even feature films.

The Anderson stop for Stand Up for Kids will be part of Allen’s national “The America I Grew Up In” tour.

“Jeff is our biggest act to date. We were very fortunate to be able to book him. Getting Jeff really raises the bar for Stand Up for Kids,” Valdez said. “He performs at a lot of churches, and we’re offering group discounts to local places of worship or organizations.”

Billed as “A Funny Event for a Serious Cause,” Stand Up for Kids has helped Kids Talk grow into a major force for protecting children since it was launched seven years ago as a program of Aspire Indiana. Kids Talk uses a collaborative approach with various county agencies to serve and protect the children of Madison County.

Aspire receives perfect score from federal agency

In June Aspire Indiana Health completed its first full On Site Visit (OSV) by officials from the Health Resources and Human Services (HRSA), the federal agency that oversees FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers) like ours.

The OSV is an exhaustive process that involves a multi-day inspection by HRSA, one that Aspire leadership has been preparing for months in advance.

Jerry Landers, Executive Director of Aspire Indiana Health, reports that the hard work has paid off: Aspire received a perfect score!

“We provided more than 600 documents totaling more than 1,400 pages of information. The review includes three years of board minutes, 159 policies and compliance with 99 standards. This was a very comprehensive review that produced a final written report that was 77 pages in length,” Landers said.

Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to turn a relatively new FQHC into high-performing model — especially those who helped prepare for the OSV review.

“This OSV report is proof of our commitment to growing our FQHC into a world-class integrated facility. We should be very proud of how far we have come in such a short period of time,” Landers said.
